Journey back in time

The history of today's Hotel Krka, in Novo Mesto, began as far back as 1889, with Fran Kovač making the first major step forward. He bought the building from Magdalena Kutnar and added ten more rooms and a restaurant. He even purchased a minibus to transport guests from the train station to the hotel and back every time a dance or a party would be held at his hotel PRI POŠTI, as it was named by Kovač.

Bought by Jakob Pavčič in 1902, the house underwent sweeping renovation and was renamed HOTEL PAVČIČ. He also bought an adjoining plot of land, built a one-storey house and linked it to the hotel. This way he got six additional rooms on the first floor and room for a café on the ground floor, which he let out to the Splichal family. The Splichals bought the café in 1907 and renamed it Kavarna CENTRAL.

A period of several ownership and name changes followed. In 1924 the hotel was acquired by Hotel UNION and let out. Six years later the hotel was bought by Alojz Polajnar, who had it renovated from top to bottom, giving the facade its present-day look and the name HOTEL METROPOL.

After World War II, during which the hotel would serve as a secret place for illegal reproduction of books, the hotel and its extension were managed by Mestno gostinsko podjetje before passing into the hands of the company Gorjanci in 1971.

The hotel's present-day layout and size evolved gradually over the last thirty years. After it was bought in 1990 by Krka Pharmaceuticals, it was renamed HOTEL KRKA and completely refurbished. In 2004 the hotel, now classified as a four-star business and conference hotel, was brought under the wing of Krka Zdravilišča, a subsidiary of Krka Pharmaceuticals, where is has remained to this day.
