Feasts at Struga Castle

Feasts at Struga Castle

Museum of living history

Many have heard of Struga Castle, much fewer have seen it, and very few have walked through its chambers. It's a castle that remains hidden unless you specifically set out to find it.

Struga Castle, originally a Pleterje Chapterhouse manor (with written references dating from 1449), on the right bank of the Krka, near Otočec, was extended into a castle by the noble Karel Jurič in the 16th century.

The manor was owned by the Jurič family up until the beginning of the 19th century, when it was first transferred to Knights Fichtenau, then to several other Carniola's noble and merchant houses. The castle led a quiet, reclusive existence in the shadow of his more popular neighbour, Otočec Castle, patiently waiting for its turn. Inaccessible, it fired the imagination of romantic souls curious what was hiding inside its walls. Today the castle is alive again. Open for tours and giving an insight into what life in the castle was like in the past, it has become a veritable museum of living history.

With its uniform period style, Struga Castle is a fine example of the characteristic 16th-century Carniolan castle architecture. On account of its commanding location by the River Krka, it ranks among strategically important monuments of the Dolenjska region. The masters of the castle, Volk Turjaški of Struga and Eleonora Sobjeska of Richenburch and Struga, are inviting you to call in for a visit. They will take you on an exciting journey back in time, to the magic of the end of the Middle Ages, of the Renaissance and Baroque.
