Natural and cultural heritage

When you come to Strunjan, a climatic health resort under the umbrella of Terme Krka, you will be amazed by the beauty of the protected area with a rich natural and cultural heritage: Strunjan Landscape Park. Some accommodation options will allow you to admire the view of ancient saltpans as soon as you open your eyes in the morning. These saltpans are part of the more widely known Piran saltpans, whose earliest written reference dates back to the year 804 and which were the Republic of Venice's largest saltworks in the period between the 15th and 17th centuries. In the saltpans – the northernmost in the Mediterranean – salt is still being produced in the traditional way. This unique saltpan scenery, which also features the only lagoon on the Slovenian seacoast, Stjuža, is home to more than 270 bird species. It is a remarkable and matchless combination of plant and animal habitats.

The park's biggest attraction is the Strunjan cliff. Up to 80-metre-high precipitous flysch cliffs, which constantly change their form due to strong winds and rain, and the pebble-beach stretch of coastal water, which stretches out into the sea for 200 metres, are a nature reserve with distinctive vegetation. There's no other cliff quite like this one in the Adriatic. It is part of the longest continuous stretch of unspoilt coastline in the entire Gulf of Trieste. The Moon Bay, above which the cliff towers, is an important nature reserve with sea-grass meadows and noble pen shells.

Nature will give you a very special welcome as soon as you enter Strunjan! The road you'll be on is lined with 116 stone pine trees. This avenue of old-growth trees, which ranks among the best preserved in the country, has been crowned a natural monument.

There are well-kept, signposted trails across the 650-hectare landscape park. You can take a guided tour to learn about the natural and cultural splendours of the area.
